Welcome to my studio projects portfolio – Part 1

Collage

“All About Me” collage created by myself in class. I was inspired by the beautiful Kootenay mountains I call home and added a few of my favourite things like camping, tea, travel, shopping and fall near the bottom.

Wire Sculpture – Inspired by Alexander Calder

Artist Statement: Mushroom Magic!

This process was really fun and something I’ve never really worked with before. First, I initially tried to create a cherry on one side and plain brown beads on the other side. Unfortunately, my cherry idea was not looking like I envisioned, so I had to pivot. Right away, I thought of a mushroom. I created two mushrooms on the other side and used a white paint pen to make the mushrooms feel more iconic.

Next up was bending and balance. The wire was slightly tricky to bend without pliers, so this could be challenging for younger ages. However, once I got the shape I wanted, it balanced on my wood block pretty much right away. The mushrooms are the same weight, so I imagine that helped.

I love how creative and unique this project is! It’s also very easy to obtain all the materials and low risk, which are always things I’m looking for. I’d definitely try this project in a classroom setting.

Bundle Dye – With Natural Dyes

Overall the process was very straight forward as follows:

  • Lightly spray your cotton piece with water to dampen it
  • Arrange the natural dye materials (dried cosmos, marigolds, eucalyptus, log wood and cochineal) on half of the fabric
  • Fold over the fabric and roll tightly, wrapping it with string
  • Allow dry time (Steaming)
  • Unwrap your bundle dye to reveal the results!!

This assignment was very fun a something I would love to explore in my future classroom. I’ve never had the opportunity to naturally dye anything! Of course tie dye was a large part of my childhood, but I never really liked it due to the messy nature of it. This process was so easy and fun and the product is something I can cherish forever.
